FAQ HEALTH BENEFITS
Coconut oil vs Healthy Oil: what are the differences?
1) HEALTH: We hate to soil it, but yes, Healthy Oil is better. Its unnnn-saturated fats are way better for your body than coco’s saturated ones. Coconut oil is saturated fat that just isn't good for you. Using Healthy Oil instead is lowering cholesterol levels, reducing inflammation and helping to build strong cells.
2) FLAVOUR: Coconut oil tastes like... well... yes... like coconuts. Not all ingredients are a good match for this strong flavour. Avocado oil adds an almost indistinguishable light and delicate taste to your food. It goes well with everything you prepare.
Is palm oil better for cooking than Healthy Oil?
No! No palm oil, definitely not! It contains a high ratio of saturated fat that just isn't good for you. Also, to make palm oil, rainforests have been deforested and replaced with vast palm oil plantations. In these man-made monocultures, local wildlife can't survive.
Olive oil vs Healthy Oil: which one is healthier?
The key difference is that Healthy Oil (= avocado oil), has a higher ‘smoke point’ than quality olive oil: 270 °C vs 160°C.
When baking, say, potatoes you want the crust to be crispy so you turn the fire up high, often burning the oil or butter. This is no good.
Healthy Oil has the highest smoke point. This means that you can use Healthy Oil while cooking at a higher heat and retain its healthy nutrients such as natural antioxidants, omegas and vitamins. Also: Healthy Oil has a milder & more delicate taste.
What is a smoke point?
The smoke point of an oil is the temperature at which the oil starts to visibly smoke in the pan. When an oil reaches its smoke point nutrients are lost, flavour is changed and, most dangerously, free radical compounds can be created that are damaging to your health. Eek!
What’s the difference between crude and refined oil?
We love uglys and sometimes they are bruised. When initially pressed, there are still some remnants left in the oil. Refining the oil gets rid of the impurities and means that we can use all of them. This process also gives our Healthy Oil an even lighter and more delicate taste.
Why is the oil refined instead of cold-pressed?
Our main aim is to keep our oil as healthy as possible and to maintain as much of the avocados’ natural goodness as we can. Refining is necessary in order to get the highest possible quality oil. As the avocados we use – the ‘uglys’ – are bruised and damaged, they often contain impurities and imperfections that we need to remove. The process leaves us with a shelf-stable product devoid of impurities, making it safe for you to cook with and enjoy.
Temperature: How high is high?
Healthy Oil can be used to cook at temperatures of up to 270 °C. It’s the only natural oil that can get this high!
Why do you call Healthy Oil the healthiest oil in the world?
Because it is! Especially when it comes to cooking! The high smoke point ensures that its power-nutrients are NOT lost at up to 270°C. This is unique. 69,7 % of the avocado oil is mono-unsaturated fat. Also Healthy Oil is a source of vitamin E, it helps protect your cells from oxidative stress. It is an antioxidant. There is 45% of the daily recommended amount of vitamin E in just one spoon of Healthy Oil (=15ml). We love that ❤
What is blended in Healthy Oil?
Nothing. Healthy Oil is an all-natural single ingredient product. Sixty avocados per litre. That's it.
What's reaaally in each bottle?
Full transparency? You got it.

Where can I find out more?
Ask our Avo Master Dave. Warning... he loves to talk about avos A LOT.
What are ugly avos?
Ugly avos are the avocados that don't make the beauty cut to be sent to the supermarkets. They are known in the industry as second grade or class two avocados. They can be classified like this because of bruising, being too ripe (or not ripe enough) or just because they are a different shape than the accepted status quo! They are typically thrown away. We rescue them and give them purpose. After all, it’s the inside that’s filled with power nutrients.
If the flesh is used to make Healthy Oil, what happens to the avo pip and skin?
The pips are dried out, and burnt as fuel for the water boilers that heat the water during the oil extraction process (we need it at 48 degrees). The very heart of the avocado is used to help create Healthy Oil! How cool is that? And the skins? Well these are processed into compost. So nothing is wasted.
Wasted avocados, why is that a problem?
Food waste is a scary thing.
Over 20% of all avocados are thrown away because they aren't prefect. That's over 2 million kgs per week in Europe alone meaning that over 20% of all resources used to grow these avocados has also been wasted. By using these 'ugly avos', farmers get a better bang for their soil and it helps the world by making better and more efficient use of the resources.
What about the amount of water used to grow avocados?
Due to demand, avocados are now grown all over the world and tracking water usage for their growth has become a hot topic. We care about this and thankfully, due to advances in technology and an increased interest in water preservation, the number of litres of water used to produce one kilogram of avocados is reducing rapidly. But did you know that litre for litre, no other food can match the avocado for nutritional value per amount of water used in growth and harvest? That's pretty cool but not quite enough cool for us.
That's why we use only wasted avocados from high-rainfall areas.
Why does Soilmates have a positive impact on the world?
Our view on sustainability is to make use of what's already been grown. We press our avos in their country of origin which makes shipping more efficient and we use green transportation when we can.
Unfortunately, there are also still a lot of avocados that are thrown away once they’ve arrived in Europe. AFTER their long travels here. We cannot accept this and are determined to make use of these as well.
